Maple Leaf Rug

Quick-and-easy stenciling turns an outdoor rug into a personalized welcome mat.

Step 1: Cut your rug to size (we used a 6'x8' piece of indoor/outdoor carpet).

Step 2: Download the leaf stencil, then print at desired size. We enlarged ours to fit a 12"x18" piece of paper.

Step 3: Cut out the leaf stencil and trace it onto a paper bag. Cut out the shape from the bag. Trace mirror images of the leaf stencil to allow the leaf stems to vary in direction.

Step 4: Lay your rug on a flat surface. Place the stencil on the rug and roll paint over it, painting from the perimeter of the stencil to the center. Use extra paper bags to protect the floor. Start at one side of the rug and work your way to the other side to avoid smudging the paint.

Step 5: Allow the rug to dry overnight. To create an opaque leaf, you may need to use more than one coat of paint. If so, allow the first coat to dry overnight before applying the second.
